Here’s what Paula Poundstone, comedienne and panelist on the popular National Public Radio quiz show, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, says about the Friends of the Library.
About the Friends
Incorporated in 1979, the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Inc. (FSCPL), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that supports the ten-branches, Outreach programs and Bookmobile in the Santa Cruz City-County Library System. FSCPL accomplishes this support through its mission:
advocacy (local, state and national library issues, newsletter and library calendar)
fundraising (grant writing, bequests, book store, book sales, and book &media campaigns)
volunteer services (placement of hundreds of adults and teens in the branches and for specific Friends events or library programs).
Library programs (concerts, author events, children and senior programs)
In addition, FSCPL sponsors, underwrites or supports a variety of Library programs, including the annual Festival of the Book, the monthly “Munching for Mozart & Friends” concert series, author talks and the Community Reads program, “Read to Me” children’s’ literacy, Book Buddies homebound outreach, book kits, and other events/programs spearheaded by the Library.
Today, there are about 1,400 Friends members of whom over 550 are adult and Young Friend volunteers. Branch-specific Friends of the Library chapters are in Felton ( www.feltonlibraryfriends.org), Scotts Valley, Boulder Creek, and La Selva Beach. Volunteers and activists for the chapters participate in the support of the construction and furnishing of the new branches in Felton and Scotts Valley, as well as branch programs and events through fundraising, events and community activism. To Volunteer for chapter work or get more information on these chapters, contact friends@santacruzpl.org or 831-420-5790.
FSCPL is governed by bylaws and a Board of Directors that meets 11 times per year, typically on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Central Branch meeting room. The Friends’ office is located in the Central Branch, 224 Church Street, Santa Cruz.
